Photography is the daughter of Psyche and Techne, of the human necessity to communicate and to create a new device for “improving communication”. If photography was not used in  everyday social life, and as primary media, it would be relocated to a specialized lab, as a microscope. 
Interpreting an archive is a matter of patience and intuition is above all asking the right questions. It’s about activating a collective memory.

Venetian, award-winning independent curator majored with a first class degree in Conservazione dei Beni Culturali (Ca’ Foscari), she has studied in both Venice and Paris winning a University fellowship at Magnum Photos Paris’ archives. Over the past ten years she has worked as a producer for both exhibitions and books, supporting over sixty photographers including Koudelka and D’Agata. Francesca’s work is linked to the production of a number of projects for Magnum Photos, both in Paris and Milan. Her works as a curator, writer and researcher include Shining in absence book (AMC - Kessels); Mother Nature (RVB - Kessels); Dalston Anatomy by Lorenzo Vitturi book (SPBH) and shows in Europe (Foam Museum in Amsterdam, CNA Luxembourg, The Photographers’ Gallery in London, in Yossi Milo Gallery in New York and at IMA Gallery Tokyo); Alex &#38;amp; Me by James Pfaff book (Montanari) and solo show at the Street Level Photoworks Gallery during the Festival Glasgow International 2018 and the new book Alex &#38;amp; Me – Coda by James Pfaff (Montanari) 2018; The Y by Alba Zari book 2019 (Witty Kiwi) and show at Maxxi in Rome (October 2019).Francesca, previously leader of the group of curators and archival researchers at Fabrica of the Benetton Group, she is Tutor for Fashion, Art and Cultural Context BA at Istituto Marangoni (Manchester Metropolitan University) School of Fashion in London; Lecturer for the Photobook and SelfPublish BA course at London South Bank University. She supports artists and young creative in discovering their own style and in developing the concept and the layout of their book and exhibition. Her texts and curatorial works are published internationally by RVB, AMC, SPBH, Trolleybooks, Silvana Editrice, Montanari and Witty Kiwi. In 2015 with the “Until Proven Otherwise / On the Evidence of the First Photos”, exhibited at Format Festival, she won the Paul Hill Exposure FORMAT15 Award. The exhibition became an Open Air Museum and an Urban Intervention firstly in Bari in 2015, invited by Planar and than at Puntasecca in 2016 for Gazebook Festival. In November 2016 the project was exhibited with a new installation at the Wroclaw Museum to celebrate the European Capital of Culture. The obsession of the First Time continues in her curatorial practice with the project Everything has its FirstTime where Francesca digs up many archetypes of our contemporary society and transforms archival materials into conceptual art. Her new works include the exhibition Quantum Pixel at Brighton Festival of Art in 2016, the video Secret Communication, The First Onscreen Woman Orgasm at London Photo Fair 2016, at Venice Film Festival 2016 and at Photo Saint Germain, Paris 2017; Fabrica x Aquagranda at Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa Gallery, Venice 2016; the video Women from Ca’ Pesaro commissioned and projected at Ca’ Pesaro, Museum of Modern Art of Venice, 2017 and at Venice Film Festival 2018. In September 2017 she was invited to do an audio performance for the collective POIUYT at UNSEEN Festival. In November 2018 she co-curated the exhibition representing the Venetian Heritage at SUZHOU DESIGN WEEK. She is actually working on “The Fist Photos – Polysemy of the primitive gesture” an archival and semiotic project. She currently lives  in Venice and works worldwide.&#38;nbsp;

































For Format Festival (Derby, UK), in March 2023, she
curated The Performing Photobook a sensory and ASMR exhibition, with
workshops and performance, and bookfair for Format23. 




In July 2023, in Gibellina on The Road Festival, she exhibited her project Magnification
– A conscious act of seeing.

Archivist

My first work in Photography fields was in archives, I worked as archivist in the first period of digitalisation, cataloguing ancient reviews of Photography, archiving photobooks, photographs and personal correspondences between photographers and gallery managers, with the national program system and studying the structures of the archives.&#38;nbsp;

ASMR provoking performance about the actual photobook situation. Where is going the photobook market? How a curator analyzes a photobook? By the story? By the editing? By the text? By the sequence? By the subject? By the photographer? By the publisher? By the photos? By the graphics? By the binding? By the paper? How much attention and time we give to all these factors when we are turning the pages? Are all the hands similar? Which hands you wish to flip your book? When you turn the pages of a photobook do you prefer the total silence or a vocal intervention of the author? How many books are made for general interest or for personal interest? Are you able to recognize a book by the sound of the touring of its pages? How many seconds do you dedicate to turn the pages of a book? This will be the first audio book of a photobook Festival, playing with the limits of photography, joking about the glamour trend of the contemporary photography, and the easy trend of a deictic communication based on the hand fetishism. Is still a photographic project when a photobook is invisible? Can the power of the sound of the touch give you the vision of the photobook?

Curating an art book means working with the artist from the concept, the design, the editing, the production, to the promotion&#38;nbsp;of the book. I collaborate even as researcher and as writer of essays. The books are published by&#38;nbsp;RVB (FR), AMC (UK), SPBH (UK), Trolleybooks (UK), Witty kiwi (IT), Silvana Editrice (IT). I have even a background as project manager for cultural and corporate books with Magnum and many Festivals of photography.

Curator and Project Manager FRANCESCA SERAVALLEI collaborated with the artist Lorenzo Vitturi since the first shooting curating and supporting the development of the project, from the book to the touring exhibition. Every location requested a new design in order to create every time a set specific exhibition to fit perfectly with space. The exhibition has been designed to inspire continuous visual stimulation to the visitors.

 For the past year, Lorenzo Vitturi has been fascinated by the Ridley Road Market in East London. It’s a multicultural market where West African vegetables meet Caribbean fruits, and Asiatic fishes meet English apples. It takes place every day in the heart of Dalston, where London’s new creative generation is, step-by-step, intermingling with the African culture. Vitturi wants to save retain an image of this authentic society before gentrification sets in and this poor area is totally converted into a place for the rich. So he photographs the people there and collects all kind of organic objects and matter, and takes them back to his studio. Black-eyed beans, nyanya chungu, smoked barracuda, azü from Gambia, soro wisa, ashanti piper guineense, schotch bonnet, ogede, plantain leaves, onion alïbasa, white round summer squash, cassava, beetroot, pink peppers, English apples, ose, and petite kola. Each item in the photos has a story to tell, a long intercontinental journey behind it. Most have come from different corners of Asia, West Africa, Niger, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, bringing the tastes and fragrances of home to the African community in London. They represent the resistance of the African food tradition to the globalisation of big supermarket chains.

In the market, everything from the micro to the macro appears related – objects to people; people to spaces; and spaces to objects, in an endless chain of
likenesses. Everything belongs together, as if all theelements had chosen one another. Day after day, the people and the colours in the market seemed to Vitturi
to have their own order and harmony, and the&#38;nbsp; hidden connections became clear, transposed into a fruit-installation in progress. The banana, with its onion
nose and pepper coiffure, resembles the profile of the hybrid people living in this multi-ethnic area. The dried rolled up barracuda from Thailand perched on an unstable pile of rotten English apples is reminiscent of a metallic necklace on a nobby neck.

Vitturi carried out anatomical research on decomposition and re-composition, attempting to recreate the same explosive and precarious beauty that inspired
him in the first place. The market is considered a physical identity, a body; subdivided by shape and colour. Afterwards, in his studio, applying a scientific
with visionary approach, Vitturi reconstructed new&#38;nbsp; anatomies, having studied the systems and functions&#38;nbsp; through dissection and analysis of the single parts.


At the Ridley Road market, every day is like a closed circle of life. The morning consists of the building of the stall, the daytime of the exposing of fruits, and then comes the decay, and the closing of the market at night. The beauty of decay belongs to the aesthetic of Lorenzo Vitturi, who was born in beautiful and decadent Venice. Decay is the quality he attempts to recreate in real life in the studio. This research is also about finding the perfect moment before destruction sets in. These sculptures are temporary; they cannot last more than a few minutes or hours. This is the biological process, the life of an installation. The photograph is the last step in this method, the only record of the sculpture’s existence, and thus the only way to see it. The central theme here is the transience of life.
